For our backup boat, The Karen, we decided to make the mold out of polystyrene foam. We traced the top view of the boat on our material, cut it out, and stacked multiple layers to create our desired depth for the model. We carved into the final layer so that out boat would have a rounded bottom and finished the outer mold with a layer of tape to create an easier removal process. For the inner mold, we repeated a similar process but allowing space for the boat wall. We were able to suspend our inner mold at its designated height using wooden dowels. When filling the boat, we mixed the cement, filled the bottom layer with our mixture to press it down, and then filled the sides with our remaining cement. After leaving it to set, we demolded the mold. While we did find one hole in the model, we were able to patch it.
